Should the US and Canada mandate side marker turn signals/mirror integrated signals?

I honestly believe it's a legitimate safety concern to be able to see if someone is signaling when you're beside them. We have all these pointless laws already regarding our DOT regulations, especially the amber front side lenses, but this one actually has a point to it. New cars are starting to come with them, but a lot aren't coming with them at the same time, especially in base trims *cough* Jetta *cough*

I think it would be better to outlaw red turn signals.

I'm against that, I'd take it off because it's an aesthetic sin. Also I don't think anybody on the road would even care to give a hoot that there's somebody beside them requesting to get into the lane. Usually I just avoid any and all blind spots. If somebody decides to go the same speed right beside me, I speed up or slow down and get out of their blind spot.

I am getting sick of everything becoming a mandate.

Fender repeaters are dorky. Side mirror signals, visible from three directions, are better, but car companies should be good on their own to offer it as an option or standard. Safe and living customers are return customers, after-all.

Government is not the answer, and shouldn't be the go-to to accomplish things.

I appreciate the side markers on semi trucks which are very long and take a while to get past because if I see those lights start flashing, I know that either he's signaling to those behind me, or he doesn't see me. Either way, I should probably get the heck out of there one way or another if I can.

But on cars, no, it's not really necessary. If you're in a situation where it might help you spot something coming at you, you probably would have spotted it at about the same time when the car starts coming into your lane. Generally if people are going to drive that stupidly and you're in a position where you can't see their front or rears, it's not going to make a lot of difference to you.

My '96 Grand Prix coupe has inset turn signals in the front and side repeaters along the rear part of the front bumper cover, but they have long ago stopped working (as in, never once while I've owned the car for the past 7 years) and I've never bothered to fix them. I've also never been in a situation where it would have helped me better signal to those beside me.

So what's the big deal?

I actually agree with this given that split second when you have to decide whether that car ahead is braking or turning...

I never got that the US doesn't have these. They've been mandatory in Europe for many decades.

I like the way Porsche does it, with the front marker that wraps around so the lamp also faces to the rear-side.

Side markers on my fender? No.

On my side view mirrors? Yes. They wrap around and let people know your intentions and look cleaner.

We meed to mandate Euro spec projectors and ban red turn signals.

If nobody uses their blinker in the first place does it really matter?

GO FOR IT!! This is the greatest safety idea since the rear “Cyclops” tail-light became law! It’s up to people to pay attention while driving, but seeing that turn signal up at your eye-level, makes it quite clear that they ARE turning.

Yeah, especially when you’re in crawling traffic on the freeway and have people darting in front of you from both sides and people waiting for you to let them in. It does help quite a bit when their taillights are behind your field of vision.
